Barbara's Story with Photographs

Our Darling Mother was a wonderful, kind, thoughtful, warm hearted, supportive, compassionate, caring and very special lady.

She was born in 1930 in Walsall. She grew up in Chuckery Road with her Mother and Father Elsie and Ted and her younger sister Rita.

When she was 16 years old while working in the offices at the local Crabtree Firm she met Laurie (our Dad) he was a Draughtsman. Four years later they married (24th March 1951) at St Matthews Church in Walsall. They honeymooned in Brent Knoll in Somerset.

Nine years later in 1960 they adopted me (Julie) and two years later adopted my sister Sally. We knew from a very young age we were adopted and Mom always told us we were very special because they had chosen us.

When we were both school age she was kept very busy by becoming a foster parent to young babies. They were only a few weeks old, she fostered many babies over the next few years, such an amazing thing to do.

In 1970 they moved to Plymouth to follow their dream and buy and run a Guest House. They named the Guest House 'Brent Knoll' after where they had honeymooned. Mom loved running the Guest House it was her pride and joy together with her two little Yorkshire terriers called Midge and Muppet.

In 1982 their first Grandchild Darren (Julie's Son) was born. Then came Charlotte in 1990, Lucy in 1993 and Jack in 1996 (Sally's Children). Mom and Dad were just the proudest Grandparents and loved their Grandchildren so very much.

In the mid 1980's Laurie (Her Husband, Our Dad) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. They made the decision to sell the Guest House and move back home to Walsall. They bought a house just across the road from the Church in Daw End Lane. Our Mom nursed and cared for our Dad for many years. He passed away in 1997.

One of the reasons they chose the house in Daw End Lane was the little Methodist Church. The Church was a great comfort to Mom before, during and after this very sad time.  She formed so many long lasting friendships over all the years she lived in Daw End Lane, and was able to return the support, comfort and understanding to all her friends.

She kept very busy after Dad had passed away as a Volunteer at the Local Alzheimer's Group she helped run with her very dear friend Jenny. Again an amazing thing to do.

As she approached her 87th year she moved into a Care Home due to loss of mobility after a fall.  She lived at Gorway House for the last three years. She soon adapted to her new surroundings and was very happy and very well cared for.

On Saturday 11th July 2020 it was her 90th Birthday. In these unprecedented times we (Julie, Tom, Darren, Lucy, Sally and Charlotte) were allowed to celebrate in the garden at Gorway House.  Rita and Allan had made a birthday cake, I (Julie) had bought a cake and Charlotte had made a magnificent home made cake. Too much cake! Exactly how it should be on a 90th Birthday! It was a wonderful happy day.

She was the most wonderful Mother to us (Julie and Sally) the most loving and caring Wife to Laurie and very special to Darren and his partner Lucy, Charlotte, Lucy, Jack, her Sister Rita and all her family and friends.

She is now to be reunited with our Dad Laurie and their two little dogs Midge and Muppet.

She will be missed so very much but her memory will live on in the hearts of all of us forever.  x
